Grant spent time as a junior at both the Lee Valley Lions and Chelmsford Chieftains and his early promise led to him first pulling on his nation's jersey at under 13s level. In 2005 he was then selected for the English Ice Hockey Association School of Excellence under 14s alongside new teammate Liam Chong who has already committed himself to the Invicta Dynamos for the upcoming campaign. At the start of 2008/09 Bignell then broke onto the Peterborough Phantoms roster in the EPL as an academy prospect, joining after a short stint with the Romford Raiders, and here he iced alongside another of his new teammates – Callum Fowler. He featured 40 times as a promising youngster for the Phantoms and picked up an early taste of success as his team enjoyed an excellent 2008/09 campaign securing the EPL title, Playoffs and EPL Cup. The following year, in 2009/10, Bignell then opted to take his game across the pond as he joined the Northeast Wisconsin Junior Green Bay Gamblers playing Midget Major AAA Tier 1 hockey in the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL). The forward would line-up over 50 times for the Junior Gamblers securing valuable ice time and developing his game in the process but has now opted to return back to the UK and will be playing his hockey out of the Silver Blades Ice Rink Gillingham in 2010/11.
